Karabiner Function Key mapping broken; driver activation fails with "(error: 1 )" #2905

The Function key mapping (using Karabiner Defaults) seemed to have stopped working after my (quite recent) upgrade to Big Sur. When I launch Karabiner Elements I don't seem to be able to activate the driver, and I am also missing the "Allow" button in Preferences. I'm also seeing a continuous warning in the log.

I tried the usual steps (disabling, restarting, and re-enabling the driver; uninstalling and reinstalling, trying again the activation procedure) with no success.

His issue seems to be similar to this one: https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements/issues/2877 but I don't seem to have a extra privilege manager software, unless the ESET antivirus could block the activation? But this was already there before the upgrade when Karabiner was working fine.

Thanks for your help!

Current setup:

Karabiner Elements versions: 14.3.0 macOS: Big Sur 11.6.1 MacBook Pro: 13" 202

A small update: after several tests I resorted to uninstall the ESET antivirus, and after a reboot I was prompted to allow the Karabiner extension, that now is working fine. So, it was indeed a conflict with ESET (maybe one of the update of its engine? These happen almost daily under the hood). I'll try now to reinstall ESET and see whether I can manage to implement an exception for the Karabiner extension (I'm supposed to have the ESET antivirus since this is a work-issued computer). Thanks!

I'll check with my institution computing helpdesk whether they have a solution, and in case I'll report here (I'm not at all a ESET expert)

have you found any solution?

Hello,

Not really, the only “solution” for now has been to uninstall ESET. The IT department of my institution I work for bounced my request for help (“contact the developer”), apparently ESET is not deliberately blocking other extensions, so the problem is probably a more subtle conflict.

Thanks anyway,

M.
