That's why it's breaking. The status bar icon needs to be there to tell android
to not kill the app.
If the icon isn't there android will keep the app running until it needs to
kill it so it can use the memory for another opened app.
Just re-enable the status icon and it'll work reliably. There's no other way
around this.

As a suggestion, how about to have the icon appear and disappear every
several hours on the status bar, instead of showing always.
