The Pi gets its power from micro USB port, which is on the back of the case. We want a separate power switch on the side. So somehow

power goes in on the back all the time
goes to the switch on the side, which may or may not be closed
goes into Pi.

Solution 1

Just buy a cable with integrated power switch. Pro: Easy to use. Con: No control over how the switch itself looks, which is a show stopper…

Solution 2

Buy cable, cut cable, solder red wires onto switch, solder other wires together again, seal, profit.

Pro: Full control over switch hardware. Con: Needs tools and soldering, but that I'll have to do anyways.
