In case this helps anyone else out there (also discussed in the FreeCAD forum):
@Ccaccia73 and me independently observed that FreeCAD was sometimes exporting groups of elements, but not groups of nodes: In the exported file, there were several ELSET defined, but only one general NSET. The behavior also seemed to be rather arbitrary (I managed to also get multiple NSET entries once at some point, just by repeating the process).
I found out (just by looking around the properties and settings) that enabling Groups of Nodes specifically in the mesh worked reproducibly on my system: Disabling does not export, enabling exports.
