Tablet Wi-Fi connectivity at Universities #302

5/1/23 - TX-01 tablet would not stay connected to Wifi on a guest network at Texas AM Univ. Tablet needed an app update for Plant Map 3D. Zack reported that attempted app installation via Esper would fail and tablet would then proceed to go offline. Sarah attempted to "Ping" and "Reboot" device remotely. Daniel in TX was logged into a Wifi and said he was able to Google things. The tablet continued to stay invisible / offline to Esper. He proceeded to "reset" his wifi which then allowed the tablet to be visible online, it rebooted from the command Sarah had sent. Daniel used a guest wifi through the browser to log in to the internet. Tablet remained online, but various attempts to push the Plant Map 3D app failed. Not strong enough wifi signal? Connectivity issues? The work around was sending Daniel the APK to load onto a non-provisioned tablet.

5/3/23- IA-01 tablet would not stay connected to Wifi on a guest network at Iowa State Univ. Error message "no available wifi". Rashelle moved to a different building with hopes of a better wifi signal. Tablet would not connect to university wifi. She will bring the tablet home for a compliance policy update.

Other past connectivity issues reported from various users but not logged. Are Universities blocking the tablets from connecting?

From Chris: Hard to tell if these are related or separate issues. I suspect in some cases we are seeing a conflict between Esper and the popup that is generated by many guest networks. I would consult with Jevon on these cases. There is always a different option that we could use going forward and that is setting up a generic account for every device. Something like psa1@ncsu.edu That would be a very big change though so I'd regard that as a fallback of last resort. The biggest advantage of that approach would be setting up eduroam accounts for every device. I'm not sure we could do it while they are deployed. Perhaps, it we signed them into our vpn while they were on their home networks.
