Allow authors to apply Pixaby and Unsplash licenses to uploaded images #394

Open unizami-kpu opened 3 years ago

Feature Description

As an author, I'd like to be able to apply a Pixaby or Unsplash license to images I use from those sources. These specific licenses are different from the CC and public domain license options currently available from the media attributions menu.

To implement, Pixaby License and Unsplash license should be added to the dropdown list that appears when a user clicks the 'License' dropdown in the ATTRIBUTIONS section of Attachment Details for an image in their media library: Screenshot from 2021-10-20 09-30-47.png

The Pixaby License should link to its terms: https://pixabay.com/service/terms/#license The Unsplash License should link to its terms: https://unsplash.com/license

Feature Use Case

Many of our authors make use of Pixaby and Unsplash. Both these sources use their own licenses.

Other Notes

This feature request is being made on behalf of Karen Meijer-Kline, Scholarly Communications Librarian at KPU.

Hi @unizami-kpu this is a great idea. Can you provide more details about the desired licenses you'd like Pressbooks to add support for? Links to license details/terms would be especially helpful as we research feasibility.

An Unsplash license option has been requested by another user here: https://pressbooks.zendesk.com/agent/tickets/8620

Posting this here because it's also about updating license options, but if it should be its own issue, I can move it as needed.

A further addition to the license options has been requested by KSU: the ability for authors to add "unless otherwise noted" to an existing book-level license. The specificity this affords is necessary in cases where books contain a range of variously licensed content. Without an "unless otherwise noted" amendment, licensing can become unclear, especially with changed rules under CC-BY-SA 4.0. Further details and an example of a potential use case can be found in this ticket: https://pressbooks.zendesk.com/agent/tickets/8928

As mentioned in the ticket, many authors add "unless otherwise noted" statements in other areas in books. But it would reduce confusion and potential copyright issues if "unless otherwise noted" was directly available in the license options on the Book Info page.

Pixabay licence also requested by another network manager (Link for PB support staff)

A lot of our Pressbooks authors have chosen Pixabay images, which don’t fit any of the options in the License drop-down menu in the image information. They use a Pixabay License (similar to public domain, but not the same). If I were typing out the image attribution, I’d say “Shopping, Spending, Till Slip” by Steve Buissinne is licensed under a Pixabay License. Is it possible to add a Pixabay category to the License drop-down, or to make that field customizable?
