Can I suggest an "alternative" to Steam? MAMEHub. #985

It's a 100% open source and free netplay lobby for playing nearly any console or arcade game up to the 6th generation of consoles. Has chat and automatic rom downloading.

It seems like this isn't quite the same category as Steam. MAMEHub appears to be focused on retro arcade games while Steam is focused on modern game distribution.

Steam (and Desura) are digital distribution services, MAMEHub specifically isn’t:

No games/ROMs are located on the server, […]

While its a pretty rad system I agree with @strugee that it doesn’t fit in the category and can hardly be used as a Steam alternative.

I don’t see anything about it enabling people to obtain new legal software either. Many such retro ROMs are encumbered in copyright conflicts and in a P2P sharing community I wouldn’t be surprised if much of the software doing the rounds is being shared illegally. That is not something PRISM Break can promote.

Closing for now, feel free to reopen if there are any arguments for MAMEHub as a distributor of games.
