Discussed in https://github.com/privacyguides/privacyguides.org/discussions/1114

Originally posted by **d4rklynk** April 27, 2022 As said on Matrix, I think adding Smart Home topic would be a great idea. For example we could add Mycroft as IPA (Intelligent Personal Assistant) (beginner topic I'd say) or how to make a subnet for Smart Home devices (for security)(advanced topic). The good practice or not, like for example on Alexa, I strongly advise to enable the little song when she starts listening and when she stops. There is Home Assistant to control devices. Explain Zigbee and others protocols (one of them is OSS but I don't remember which one). More and more people use smart home devices so IMHO Smart Home has its place on PG.

I was actually thinking of doing an article a while back about this when I was exploring automation through the use of https://www.openhab.org/.

I think we could put that in the same place.

I've been using HomeAssistant for a few years now and highly recommend it. It's gotten quite mature, and I haven't really touched it in the last year or so and it continues to just work.

Since the same developers work on ESPHome, they work great together and enable some more technically-advanced users quite a bit of control. My personal protocol preference, however, is Tasmota (maybe the OSS protocol you were thinking of?). If it's within the scope of this topic, both Athom and Cloudfree sell pre-flashed Tasmota devices for pretty cheap.

Maybe project matter can also be added?
