Hello Ido,

I noticed a couple of subroutines in the HMM toolbox could use some optimization for numerical stability. I wonder if I can contribute these changes to the PMTK toolbox. Thank you very much.

This looks like a major change. I don't have time to codereview it. Also, I am trying to deprecate the matlab code and move to python. So I am going to decline the merge request.
