Based on different style guides, in the following examples, the cross-references form “proper nouns” and hence should be captialized:
“… as can be seen in Figure 3“ “… see Chapter 4 for more information”
N.B.: Using named references does not result in proper nouns:
“ … we considered this in section ‘How to do this thing’ on page 43”
This is in contrast with the current style employed by the journal and should be straightenend out in due time
