Olá @joanacvp,
You will be aware that the figure images which accompany this lesson are extremely complex, and contain a vast amount of text (which is in the original language).
This of course, raises an accessibility problem, which we are aware of (I know that the alt-text is detailed, and that is very necessary). But it also creates a translation challenge.
Do you plan to recreate the images?
One option raised for consideration has been that we request the original author facilitates future translation by providing a "mute" version of each diagram or figure.
Let me know what you think?
With many thanks, Anisa
Hi @anisa-hawes!
Indeed, I can create the figures which are now in french (translating them into Portuguese). It would be great if the original author provide a "mute" version. Do you think it is possible for this case?
Thank you very much.
Hello @joanacvp. Yes, I think this should be possible. I will write to the original author, and ask them if they can provide this for us. I will let you know as soon as I hear back so that you can move this forwards. Thank you.
Another option we could consider is to create the diagrams in Mermaid, or similar. (Have you worked with Mermaid before? I'm new to it, but was able to create various forms of flow chart and timeline diagrams after some experimentation). This may actually provide a more robust solution to the accessibility issues as well as the translation challenge? – I will still go ahead and ask the author, but would be interested to hear your thoughts.
Thank you very much @anisa-hawes. I haven't worked with Mermaid yet, but I will try for sure.
Dear @joanacvp. I hope you're well?
The original author has kindly provided us with a "mute" version of all figures that contain text (i.e., the diagram element only, without any annotations / labels) upon which I hope you will be able to overlay your translated text. Please let me know if you think this will be workable for you, or if I can help in any way?
tr-pt-transcricao-automatica-grafias-nao-latinas-01.png
. In case it is easier for you, I will also send them to you by email. Either way, you can download the "mute" versions, then re-work and upload each one. Please note that this set does not include Figure 18 (the author cannot find this file) or Figure 21 (the author does not have the source – this image was generated with Python). Do you think you can create your own alternative versions for these two?
Hello @joanacvp ,
Thank you for sending me your annotated versions of these figures! I've resized and uploaded them: https://github.com/programminghistorian/ph-submissions/commit/5d73be91a31c8761a8e08d1e4f0d199160f2f40c. You will notice that I have allowed us slight flexibility with the scale here, re-sizing them to 1000px on the longest edge (rather than 840px on the longest edge) because I found that the text was becoming pixelated when I made them any smaller. Please let me know what the loading time is like from your side? If it is acceptable, I feel this might be a reasonable compromise.
I think the .zip file you shared with me is missing figure 4, which remains in the "mute" form in the directory.
N.B. I am aware that I need to re-size the remaining (untranslated) images ahead of publication too, as these are much larger than is our convention. I will make myself a note to do this.
Dear @anisa-hawes. Thank you very much for all the support in the files. Figure 4 is the same as Figure 1. Do you want me to make a copy and upload it with the the reference to fig 4?
Thank you!
Oh! I didn't realise this @joanacvp. Is figure 4 an exact duplicate of figure 1? (With exactly the same annotation?)
No problem. Indeed, it is the same :)
Okay. I’ll adjust the filename in the liquid syntax so that it refers to Figure 1 again, although the caption is for Figure 4.
I’m a little bit confused, but I will translate a few paragraphs and I’m sure it will make sense 🙃
If it is easier for you I can do it :)
Just seeing this, @joanacvp. Done: https://github.com/programminghistorian/ph-submissions/commit/185e594a6da0f3baa67024e773fd66a200122a7f
Perfect!
Dear @anisa-hawes and @joanacvp, is this ready for move forward? Can I start looking for reviewers? Thanks
Hello! Yes, we can move forward 👍
Thank you @joanacvp
Estou a aguardar.
No final a @joanacvp incorpora essas alterações no ficheiro.

Obrigado a ambos!
Bom dia.
Thank you, @DanielAlvesLABDH and @joanacvp! We're very excited that another translation from the Jisc/TNA special series is nearing publication! ✨
The Publishing team will now begin Phase 6. Sustainability + Accessibility. This is a series of checks and actions which include reviewing the lesson's typesetting + generating archival links.

Hello @ericbrasiln,
This lesson's sustainability + accessibility checks are in progress. @charlottejmc and I will update you here in the Issue thread when these are complete so that you can read through the lesson one final time before we stage it for publication. We'll aim to finish this work by the end of next week Friday 8th March.

Hello @joanacvp. Yes! It is here: <formulário de declaração>.
Thank you @anisa-hawes. I just sent it to you by email :)
Hello,
This week and next I'm at an academic event in Rio de Janeiro. I won't be able to work on the proghist until next Friday. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Thank you, @ericbrasiln. No pressure from our side.
We'll work through the Sustainability + Accessibility steps between now and then 🙂
Noting here that we have uploaded the pt-tr
image set to Jekyll in advance https://github.com/programminghistorian/jekyll/pull/3189.
Hello @joanacvp, I just have a couple questions to run by you which came up while I was typesetting.
Thank you very much! We're really close to publication now ✨
Hi @charlottejmc! In paragraph 21 I followed the same formatting as on the original lesson. On the original lesson they are italicised, so I choose to do the same. In paragraph 98 it is ok as "scripta", meaning, written in non-latin languages.
Thank you very much :)
