Get a bees’ eye view of your landscape!

Managed honey bees and wild bees travel far from their nests to find food. What are your bees experiencing during their journey? This tool will help you understand how the landscape surrounding your apiary, garden, or farm stacks up in terms of the floral resources bees can find, the pesticides they encounter, and, for wild bees, the nesting sites that are available.

Click on the map to see how your landscape stacks up!

Help us see the world as a bee!

Our goal is to give beekeepers, gardeners, and growers detailed information about the quality of their landscapes for bees, and site-specific recommendations for land and bee management practices. But, to do this, we need your help, so we can have data from many diverse landscapes! If you have a wild bee hotel and would like to participate in our study, please click here. If you are a beekeeper, please follow the link below. {waiting on link for "please click here")

After the activation link, add "We are looking forward to working with you to make the world a better place for bees! Sincerely, Beescape Team”

Add your apiaries

β€œPlease drop a pin to locate your apiaries on the map. Then come back to this page and select the apiaries that you want to include in the survey.”

β€œHere, you will find links to the available surveys for your selected apiaries. If the link is in red, it is a reminder to add information. If the link is in green, it means the information has already been added. You can add more apiaries at any time. Please note that you need to complete the survey after you initiate it - it is not possible to partially save your work."

"Beekeepers manage for varroa in numerous ways. Chemical treatments include organic acids (oxalic and formic acids), thymol and other menthols, and synthetics. Mechanical strategies include removing drone brood and briefly caging the queen in the summer."

"The alcohol wash is the gold standard in Varroa monitoring and is recommended due to precision and consistency. Premade cups designed for the alcohol wash work very well. Submerge nurse bees (1/2 cup or 300 bees) in alcohol, shake for 30 seconds, and allow to soak for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Next, strain the bees from the alcohol and count the mites. An important consideration when monitoring for mites is to do things as consistently as possible.

The sugar shake or sugar roll method is similar to the alcohol wash. Powdered sugar is used instead of alcohol and the bees are vigorously shaken for 2 minutes or more to dislodge mites. The mites are then separated through a screened lid and counted. This method is less accurate and more time consuming than the alcohol wash but is preferred by beekeepers who want to reduce bee deaths and who are not monitoring large numbers of colonies.

Stickyboards are a less reliable form of regular Varroa monitoring. The number of mites that drop can vary greatly and the boards require specific equipment, regular visits to the colonies, and the time to count multiple boards over many days. Mite counts with using this method cannot be integrated into the pro level of participation at this time."

"You can determine if a queen is present by locating her physically or checking for eggs. However, by late fall the queen stops laying eggs. We ask that beekeepers use their best judgement when making the assessments during these times."

"Please note here if your queen came from a particular genetic line such as Russian, Italian, or has Varroa sensitive or mite resistant genetics."

Is the "registration pop-up" the modal that opens when you click this button? screen shot 2019-01-29 at 5 05 06 pm

The proposed -- "Search bar should read "Zoom to your location" would indicate that the search zooms. Currently, the geolocation search maintains the zoom level while displaying the selected location.

The registration workflow backend are the exact same between the two apps (Bee Pollinator and Beescape). This includes things like registration email copy, forget password confirmation, activation link confirmation page. Can we get copy that is generic and friendly to make sense within the context of both? It would otherwise be a heavy lift πŸ€”
