A while back @gerard070 and I discussed enhancing the year selector on the "Explore" page to highlight the years where data was actually available (either at the "Worldwide" or "Country" levels). @ashkenas made a similar suggestion in recent meeting noting these visualizations from the Wayback Machine...
I think this will take some work to get right, but given that it's come up a few times now and could be a significant time saver for our users I wanted to start formalizing the idea and maybe put something together in Figma. Here's what I'm thinking in terms of high-level goals...
Use minimal screen real estate (e.g. a spark line chart integrated into the current selector space).
Indicate where on the selector data is available.
Indicate the different types of data available if possible (e.g. demographics, politics, economics).
