This will be part of the #13 upgrade.
Regarding the specific items in this issue:
Date in the timestamp: I agree this should be added. It shouldn't be any trouble.
Filenames: this was done because it's the full path that gets printed, and I didn't want all of that. So I cut it at something that seemed reasonable for file identification in most cases. I'll have to see how this works in the new logging system.
Sparseness of the log file: the files are sparse to speed up processing in production builds. The boost logging system allows asynchronous logging, which puts the actual act of logging in its own thread. That might speed things up a bit such that we can increase the verbosity by one level in our production builds.

As a further enhancement, the log files are very sparse - they only appear to have startup and crash information.
