Obligatory disclaimer: we don't currently support builds for architectures other than amd64.

I'm happy to merge this to unblock you, but expectation is that you and the other community members who work on mips64el will help maintain this.

In the very unlikely event that we end up with build issues from this that impact the main amd64 build we may need to revert these changes temporarily, or get your help to fix and test.
