The mask estimator helps a lot in locking onto weak signals, particularly if there's gaps between transmissions. Enabling it by default will probably help new stations receive signals.
It cannot be enabled by default on RTTY however, as the tone spacing is essentially unknown (depends on the transmitter). At least with RS41HUP the tone spacing is well known.
