This could be done similar to diffmask using dispatch.conf

Is there any hope of landing this? I'm not sure of the operation results, would definitely like to preview first.

Only if you write all the code. But I suppose you'd need to finish the pending rewrite first because git master is not 100% useful right now, and I really lack the time to go over all of this.
