Nigel comes to us from a risk background and is one of the executive leaders at Charles Schwab whose role it is to navigate the credit, market and operational risks associated with banking, which If you've read at all about Silicon Valley Bank in the past few months is very important to the health of a bank.
BREAK
Talks surrounding the internship and job search often include name-dropping prestigious schools and top companies, but it is important to recognize that this is not all that matters during this process. It is crucial to have an open-minded attitude, the curiosity to learn something new everyday, and the courage to take risks and try something out of your comfort zone. Looking at the numbers, top banks and firms do not hire solely or even majorly from ivy league or top schools. During this already stressful time, you should not feel discouraged if you face obstacles in your internship or job search. Nigel Murtagh provides a unique story and perspective into his own internship search, the challenges he faced, and the subsequent actions he took to overcome them.
He has become a well respected executive in the risk space, but his road to getting there was not all easy. The internship search was difficult as he came from a school that was not well known for economics or finance. But did he let that stop him? Or discourage him? No, absolutely not. In fact in order to break into the industry he actually created his own bank, well technically a credit union, run by students for students. It took him a long time to reach his current point, but he did so using the advice he shares with us today to eventually become a leader at Charles Schwab.
Headquartered in Westlake, Texas, Charles Schwab is an American multinational financial services company, offering banking, commercial banking, investing, consulting, and wealth management advisory services to retail and institutional clients. They currently have 8.14 trillion in assets under management and continue to lead in the industry and innovate on behalf of clients.
Today Nigel Murtagh comes to us with valuable insights and advice of how to stay curious and motivated even when faced with challenging roadblocks. He takes us through his early career and the inspirational stories around starting a credit union run by students for students. After analyzing the company culture at Charles Schwab, he explains why it is important to resonate with your company and how to find a company that is the right fit for you.

It is crucial to have an open-minded attitude, the curiosity to learn something new everyday, and the courage to take risks and try something out of your comfort zone. Prestigious schools are one pathway to success and one way for you to acquire all the necessary skills, but it is not the only way. Oftentimes, these schools are listed almost as prerequisites, but that could not be further from the truth. Hard work and dedication, regardless of your background, take you further than any name. Looking at the numbers, top banks and firms do not hire solely or even majorly from ivy league or top schools. He has since become a well respected executive in the risk space, but his road getting there was not all easy. When he was going through the internship search himself looking for finance internships, it was a very difficult process because he came from a school that was not well known for economics or finance. But did he let that stop him Or discourage him? No, absolutely not. Instead he tried to create his own opportunities to showcase his talent in a different way. To do this when he was first starting out trying to attract the attention of one of the banks, he gathered a few friends on campus and started a credit union with his friends which was run by students for students. Taking this approach of turning lemons into lemonade has served him throughout his career and as a result he is now a leader at Charles Schwab.
