PAUSE PAUSE PAUSE

I’m James and on the show today my co-host, Brett, speaks with the Kinnevick's Investment Director, Tatiana Shalalvand. It isn't often that the investment director of an investment management firm starts their career as a communications consultant focused on crisis management but that's exactly how Tatiana kicked off her career. Along the way she took risks, bet on herself, and followed her passions to get to where she is now at Kinnevick.

Tatiana Story:

Some students go through college expecting to launch directly into what will be their career for the next 40 years or so. This can make that process of finding and applying to your first job very stressful as the pressure of picking the right job for the best career path looms over you. Questions like "What if I hate the work?", or "Am I sure this is the industry I want to be in?" can become recurring thoughts as you fill in application after application. Our guest today, Tatiana Shalalvand, is living proof that these fears need not exist and that your career path is as permanent and confining as you let it be. In fact that is not the reality for most people in the job market today. The Bureau of Labor Statistics for example cites that the average person entering work today will have 12 different jobs before they retire. And that's why I think If she had let her first job define her career path she would be in a much different spot than she is now as the Investment Director at Kinnevick.

Kinnevick Info: Just to give you a little background on the firm, In 1936 Kinnevick was founded by Hugo Stenbeck, Wilhelm Klingspor, Robert von Horn as a Swedish investment company. Early on their main focus was agriculture, candy, and forestry. Today they have expanded their market to Europe and the US and their investments are focused on using technology to address vital everyday needs. They have taken a special interest in climate change along with digital disruption with the overarching ambition of being Europe's leading listed growth investor. The company is currently 36 employees strong, led by CEO Georgi Martin Ganev.

Tatiana Info:

Tatiana's first job after graduating from Lund University in Sweden was at a company called Prime. There she worked as a communications consultant for about a year before she transitioned into a crisis management consultant role for the next few years. After a while she got to the point where she wanted to do something different, so she went to work for Ericsson. Tatiana quickly realized she had made a mistake because large enterprises just weren't right for her and she reached out to a startup CEO in her network who essentially created a role that fit her skills. While Ericson was a very safe job, she decided to take a bet on herself even though it led to a short term decrease in bot salary and title. After restarting her career in the startup world she worked at a couple other startups until she came to Kinnevik. Its not very often that you see someone with a communications background end up being a major part of an investment company, but with that unique background comes plenty of insight and learning experiences about how it is actually possible. From advice about leadership styles to tips for students looking to get into Venture Capital, this conversation has something for everyone. With that being said, lets not wait any longer and dive in!

It can be easy to feel as if you are trapped to solely do work related to your major as you graduate college and enter the workforce. If that were the case though, then our guest Tatiana Shalalvand likely wouldn't be where she is now working as the Investment Director at Kinnevick. Though her background in communications is unique for the venture capital space, it has afforded her with the ability to provide a distinct perspective from day to day. In this interview Tatiana talks about different leadership styles, gives some great career advice, and even has a few tips for students thinking about working in venture capitalism.
