CUT

I’m Caroline Radke and with my co-host Brett we chat with Chris Marty, the Operating Partner at Unusual Ventures. Chris is energized by progressive talent and people strategies and has extensive recruiting experience at various companies. Chris' story may resonate with many of you because he did not think this would be his career in high school or college, let alone think he would even be excited about it. But, here he is and he loves every minute of it, and today he shares key pieces of advice with us all in this interview.

CHRIS STORY:

It is not very common for someone to study English and Sociology in college and move to working in big tech and venture capital. However, our guest, Chris Marty, is living proof that it is possible. Having grown up in Menlo Park, the heart of Silicon Valley, the fast-paced tech industry was not foreign to him. However, Like many of you listening, he wanted a change after high school, which is why he left that setting for college and pursued something entirely different, but something that he was passionate about. (THIS LAST SENTENCE DOESN"T MAKE SENSE TO ME) Students often wonder if working in a specific industry or a specific location is even possible if they aren't pursuing the traditional career path or majors that typically are seen in those spaces. (THIS LAST SENTENCE DOESN"T MAKE SENSE TO ME) However, Chris did it, and he shares his unique advice and perspective on this today. After many different stepping stones throughout his career, he is helping the next multi-billion dollar companies build elite recruiting foundations. He has had quite the journey, transitioning both between locations and types of companies, and is now leading talent for Unusual’s Applications, Marketplaces, Fintech and Consumer investments. (THIS PARAGRAPH DIDN"T REALLY RESONATE WITH ME AND I DIDN"T GET WHAT YOU WERE TRYING TO SAY. ALSO DIDN"T FEEL THERE WAS NARRATIVE OR A THEME)

UNUSUAL VENTURES INFO:

Just to give you a little background on the firm, Unusual Ventures is a seed-stage venture capital firm designed from the ground up to give a distinct advantage to founders building infrastructure software and application-level companies. It was founded in 2018 with the mission to serve entrepreneurs with an unprecedented level of hands-on services. Portfolio companies describe Unusual Ventures as a partner versus a top-down stakeholder, and they are laser-focused on serving exceptional founders and teams building innovative products. Unusual Ventures has offices in Menlo Park, San Francisco, and Boston, and have invested in companies like Arctic Wolf Networks, Robinhood, and Harness.

CHRIS INFO:

Chris graduated from William & Mary with a BA in English Language and Literature and Sociology. He worked in the admissions office at William & Mary and believed that set him up well for something more formal in higher education when he graduated. It was very relationship oriented while he worked in an admissions office for a small liberal arts college outside of Baltimore. Having grown up in Menlo Park, he had left the area for college to get away from all the tech and didn't think he would venture back towards it. However, while he liked the education space, he realized it didn't have the intensity and fast moving nature that he had witnessed in Silicon Valley. He wanted more of this, and claims he "got lucky" by getting a job at a start up called Wildfire in the Bay Area. He hopped between a few different companies include large ones like Google and Dropbox and eventually found his niche at Unusual Ventures. Today we get to hear from an absolute guru in the recruiting space and we hope you enjoy.

@carolineradke The chris story needs adjusting. Just didn't resonate with me. Is there anything from what he said that we can create a narrative off of?

If you could create the new version in a separate comment that would be great so we can track it all.

CHRIS STORY:

Starting from the ground up, Chris Marty's career narrative diverges from the traditional pathway for most college students. As an English major without a technical background, Chris initially embarked on a professional journey in higher education after graduating. Despite initially veering away from the tech scene even though he grew up in Silicon Valley, Chris's curiosity and desire to delve into a more rapid-paced industry increased over time and a transition to a startup in the Bay Area marked the beginning of a new chapter. His subsequent move to a company called Wildfire, which was eventually acquired by Google, offered an exhilarating peak into the realms of big tech. Despite this seemingly ideal transition, Chris realized that mere association with a prestigious brand didn't align with his personal mission. It was this realization that steered him towards valuing impact over titles or brands and guided his focus towards startups. This led him to experiences at companies like Dropbox and Wealthfront, where he carved a name for himself in tech startups. He notes that embracing moments of conviction, although initially contradictory to conventional career moves, steered him towards rewarding outcomes. Ultimately, these diverse experiences have brought him to his current role at Unusual Ventures, where he helps companies build robust foundations for their future growth.
