I'm Howie Emond and today’s episode is with our host, Brett and his conversation with Eric Nagy, Director of Technology in Sports Partnerships and Innovation at Verizon. Eric's an engineer at heart, but had the opportunity to explore the business side of tech as well during his career at Verizon, which put him on a whole different trajectory and in unique position to talk about both sides with us today.

(Background) It might come as a surprise to those of us deeply involved in our major and studies, but in your career, it's highly likely that you won't be working in your degree's field. In fact, the National Center for Education Studies reports that only 27% do! That means that 73% of college graduates are working in a field different from what they studied. Crazy, right? Eric Nagy fits this profile almost perfectly. From his degree in IT to his now career in sports partnerships at Verizon, his story embodies the potential to grow and explore once you land a career!

His range of interests were broad in college, and it’s hard to imagine that during his time there what he actually aspired to be was an FBI agent, not an engineer. But life threw him a bit of a curve ball. It Turned out, he actually didn’t have the required vision to join the Bureau, so he discussed career options with his advisor. They laid out several paths for him: law, accounting, and IT. Law and accounting didn’t sit right, and IT was starting to see major growth as a career path, so that’s what he chose. After graduation, Verizon had just been created from a merger between of several telecommunications companies, and he got an offer to join them on their endeavors as a managing director. This was foreign to him, as he thought of himself as solely an engineer. He took the job as a bit of a leap of faith and he was rewarded with a long career at Verizon. Through the years, he’s held a variety of different roles, but in his current role as the Director of sports partnerships and innovation is a dream job for many because he gets to be hands on with all the sports teams and organizations you know and love to help them implement Verizon's latest technology into their organizations.

(Analysis) In this interview, we hit lots of important points for aspiring engineers and for all students trying to navigate their early career path choices. We’ll start by hearing about that early decision to join Verizon, as well as how he managed rotating positions early on. We get to learn about how his career evolved, as well as what advice he has to share for those in similar positions. From being open to new opportunities, getting exposure, and taking on new assignments to building a network and finding a mentor...and he also has lots to share about how to get ahead early on. We’ll also do a quick brush on the potential of 5G and the developments in the IT space, as well as how his organization operates along with the opportunities coming in the near future for the industry. We’re really excited to share this one with all of you, so lets get right into it…

I would just add a bit to the background at the front and then it looks good. See the Capitalized letters for my comments
