Concepts of energy, fulfillment, intentionality, or consciousness are rarely discusses in terms of career and work. However, Matt McCall, founder of Forge Capital, goes into some incredible depth on just how related the ideas are. I'm Howie Emond along with my co-host Brett and on Today’s episode we have a truly fascinating discussion with Matt McCall, founder of FORGE Capital. This conversation is top to bottom eye-opening and mind expanding. Matt has been a top investor for decades, but his approach to investing which he has imbued in his new firm Forge is eye opening. With his new fund, he combined his deep thoughts on philosophy with his studies of human behavior to rethink how to have a positive impact on the world while maintaining a successful venture firm.
(Stats Macro-theme, background)
Energy of the mind, body, and soul is an interesting concept. Spirituality and inner-peace combined with willingness and intention are often thought of as religious topics and focuses, but Matt McCall has built a unique bridge towards its use in a career. When we think of ideas of professional contentment, we often consider things like salary, passion, power, influence, personal goals, and more. The spin in this interview, though, is that those are more surface, and true fulfillment comes from within. You can land the greatest job you’ve ever dreamed of, but if you aren’t willing to continue learning, developing, and attaining a sense of self-actualization, you may find yourself in a state of continual low energy.
What is low energy? What is high energy? This is where Matt McCall’s thoughts shed light on the idea. He thinks of fulfillment in terms of energy. When you’re unmotivated, dragging along, uninspired, and unwilling to learn, you have low energy. High energy, on the other hand, takes those opposites: motivation, drive, inspiration, a passion for learning your role. The goal, of course, is to find a life in the latter. Matt’s career is based on this mindset, and he embodies high energy like you’ve never seen. Relaxed and calm in demeanor, his spirit and passion for his own development and that of those surrounding him is unmatched. Growth never has to end, especially not following your higher education. Taking your abilities grow: expanding the mind, incremental improvement, being intentional, and such into your career is where the journey continues, and where Matt McCall’s genius comes in.
For context, we need a short synopsis on his company and career. He’s the founder of Forge Capital, an investment firm focused on the personal growth and wellbeing of its ventures. Very on brand. He also serves as an adjunct professor for entrepreneurship at CU Boulder and the University of Denver, also on brand. His passion for empowerment spans everything from his career to himself himself, his family, his peers, and even you: the learner and listener.
(Analysis)
As discussed, this interview closely follows concepts of energy, philosophy in a career, and happiness. We go over how one can seek learning opportunities to help drive continual personal growth. We talk repetition and intentionality, what that means and how it can help you be a more whole professional and human. We touch on discovery of purpose, and how one can find their passion in meaningful ways. We even talk incremental improvement, how 1% every day can change your life. If I can break the 4th wall here for a second and say: this has got to be one of my favorite interviews that I’ve worked on here at ProMazo, and I couldn’t be more excited for everyone listening to draw from and utilize the concepts and tools that Matt discusses in their own lives. Let’s dive in…
