BREAK

I’m James Moore and on the show today our host Brett is speaking with the managing partner at Altair Capital, Dr. Igor Ryabenkiy. Igor has had a pretty remarkable ride, starting off investing at home in the Former Soviet Union, but eventually shifting his focus beyond regional businesses to ventures that could be scaled globally. He has been an investor for decades at this point, and it shows in the quality of the points he touches on in our conversation with him.

BREAK

Depending on where you go to school, and what time frame you go to college perhaps you could have taken a class or two in entrepreneurship or even pursued a degree in entrepreneurship from a select few institutions. For those who weren’t afforded the opportunity to learn about what it means to be an entrepreneur, starting your own business can sound like taking a bad risk with little chance of any positive outcomes coming from it. When today's guest was in school, studying in the Former Soviet Union, being an entrepreneur wasn’t even legal! Yet 4 years after he graduated from college it became legal to be an entrepreneur and he immediately was focused on becoming one. Now the managing partner at Altair Capital, Igor Ryabenkiy, started out from scratch when it came to engineering, serving as a beacon of hope to those who felt that entrepreneurship was way over their heads.

Altair Info:

Over time built his company to powerhouse in the initial stages of investing. Altair Capital is a seed stage VC firm that was founded and is currently managed by Dr. Igor Ryabenkiy. The company is specifically focused on investing in startups within the IT sphere, including but not limited to businesses focused on SaaS, Fintech, Healthtech, Insuretech, D2C, and Marketplaces. 20+ years into the game and Altair is managing over $600 million, has over 300 companies in their portfolios, and have led over 20 successful exits which include PandaDoc, CarPrice, and Socure.

Igor Info:

When Igor graduated from university in the Former Soviet Union, he had earned a masters degree in mathematics and computer science and had a general idea of what he would do with his life. He thought he would eventually end up working as a programmer, a designer, or an electronic engineer, but that changed when the Soviet Union made it legal to be an entrepreneur and do commerce. Since then he invested in several companies both by himself and as a part of larger funds, and seen great success. The hundreds of investments he has and hasn’t made have left Igor with a wealth of knowledge when it comes to investing, pitching to others, raising funds for ideas, and even the best and worst early stage corporate structures for startups. Outside of investing Igor goes in depth about his journey to get where he is now, advice for students deciding what route to take out of college, how to build a strong connections, and why he thinks international experience is so important....(Fade Out)

When it comes to being an entrepreneur Dr. Igor Ryabenkiy truly started from ground zero. At the time he graduated from university in the former Soviet Union it was actually ILLEGAL to be an entrepreneur. It wasn’t until 4 years after he graduated that it was finally allowed and he seized the opportunity immediately without looking back. Decades later, Dr. Ryabenkiy is the managing partner at Altair Capital and has seen an enormous amount of success with over 20 successful exits and 300+ companies in their portfolio. In this interview ,Igor shares some advice for those looking to be entrepreneurs, why he stresses the importance of international experience for personal development, along with the types of companies he thinks students should look for based on their goals or ambitions.
