Clip: 32:13 - 32: 40 OFFICE HRS GENERAL INTRO: Hello hello everyone (EXCITED AND WITH ENERGY) welcome back to Office Hours. A show about how to make a successful jump from college to young professional life. We know that landing your first job can often be an intimidating, complicated and stressful process, but its not impossible! (UP ENERGY) And we’re here to help by giving you access to some of the brightest minds in business to get their advice for how to build a successful career. Take what you can (short pause), pick what you like and listen for that stroke of brilliance that you can use to help you get hired. (edited)

I’m your co-host James along with Brett and on the show today we have the Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer of Paychex, Bradley Schaufenbuel. Many of us come out of school excited that it is the last time we'll have to sit for finals or write research papers. Bradley took the opposite approach. Not only does he have an MBA, he is also a fully licensed lawyer in Illinois, but he didn't stop there because his true passion is cyber because it is where he feels like it is where he can have the most impact so for good measure he became an expert in this field as well.

CUT

Brad Story: I'm going to pose a scenario to you, and I want you to keep the answer in mind. Assume you are washing your hands one day when you go to turn off the sink and see that the faucet doesn’t completely shut off anymore. You could at that moment call a plumber, watch a youtube video and figure out how to do it yourself, or you could just save time and money by shrugging and walking away because it’s just one little leak. What are you going to do? One of Ben Franklin’s most famous sayings is that “ An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of Cure”. When it comes to problems in business and in life, whether they’re big or small, we have a choice to be proactive or reactive in a lot of situations. Yet for some reason taking advantage of the opportunity to be proactive with something as simple as the situation I posed to you just a few seconds ago is not something many students do, with 87% of high school and college students saying that they procrastinate according to a study done by "StudyMode" in 2015. Today's guest, Bradley Schaufenbuel is a major proponent of being proactive rather than reactive in both his life outside of work and in work. And as the Chief Information Security Officer for Paychex, it quite literally pays to be proactive.

Paychex Info: In 1971, B. Thomas Golisano founded Paychex with the goal of simplifying Payrolls for small and medium sized businesses. More than half a century later, Paychex is one of today's leaders in the integrated human capital management industry, with solutions available for HR, Retirement plans, employee benefits, and more. Headquartered in Rochester, NY, and led by CEO John B. Gibson, Paychex employs around 16,000 employees to help serve over 700,000 business clients in the US and Europe. In 2021, Fortune Recognized them as one of the World’s most admired companies, and in March 2023 they were honored for the 15th time as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere.com.

Brad Info: Brad comes to Paychex after a storied career across multiple roles. From a young age Brad has had an interest in computers. He recalls receiving a commodore 64 when he was 10 years old and spending his weekends and evenings programming this computer as a hobby. PAUSE He was also passionate about making a real world difference and catching bad guys since he was a child. After discovering the crossroads of these two interests intersecting in cybersecurity while in college, Brad soon knew what it was he wanted to be doing. Nearly three decades, an MBA, a JD in Law, a LLM in Information Technology and Privacy Law, and over 20 certifications later Brad is still extremely passionate about Cyber Security and his work as the Chief Information Security Officer for Paychex. The conversation today goes well beyond cybersecurity and dig deeper into how Brad got to where he is now, his thoughts on leadership compared to management, leading in a virtual work environment, guidelines for the first 6 months at a new job and advice for those considering the pursuit of an MBA. This conversation has something beneficial for everyone, so with that being said…LET'S DIVE IN.

0:11 - 45:12 No Audio Glitches

As data becomes increasingly valuable and voluminous, the security of that information is of the utmost importance. No one understands that more than today's guest Bradley Schaufenbuel, the Chief Information Security Officer at Paychex. From a young age Brad had an interest in computers and also in making a real world difference in catching “bad guys”,so when he came across the world of cybersecurity in college it was a perfect fit. It is apparent throughout the interview that Brad is truly passionate about what he does, and is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to information security. Outside of cybersecurity he also touches on the importance of being proactive, the difference between leadership and management, and advice for those considering pursuing their MBA.
