Podcast Description This is (Podcast Name) from Promazo, where we focus on getting students the professional advice they need to get started on their career journeys. This episode is from our hosts, Brett and James, and their highly relevant conversation with David Jacobsen, Vice-Chair of BMO Harris.

Quick how he got around David’s early career as a lawyer in Chicago quickly turned into a political endeavor when he served extensively under President Barack Obama in his administration and as an ambassador. Today, he’s moved into the world of finance and banking, serving as the Vice-Chair of BMO Harris.

TRANSITION TO BIO (Background music change) In his early career, David explored the law field as a lawyer in Chicago, building his network. While that was going well, at some point along the way, he mentions that had an encounter with some politician with a funny name, and decided to get involved with his work. That guy actually turned out to be Barack Obama, and David decided to leave the Law field, and transition over into the world of politics completely. He worked on his senate campaign, then followed him through his presidential campaign, and later he actually served alongside President Obama on his White House staff. If you thought that was cool enough, he went even farther and got appointed as ambassador to the United States’ largest trading partner in Canada. He actually is responsible for expanding the trading relationship between the two countries to its highest level in history, and the highest between two countries ever seen before in the world. David’s career has taken him through a variety of positions in different fields, but as of now, he works in the world of finance and banking, serving as an executive at the banking group BMO Harris, and on the board of the Bank of Montreal. BMO Harris is the 8th largest banking and investment service in North America with over 12,000 employees over 12 million customers globally. They serve 8 million personal and commercial customers in Canada, and over 2 million in the United States. While their parent company is the Bank of Montreal, they are based in Chicago, and actually have over 500 branches across the states. Their influence doesn’t stop there, as something else to note is they donated over a billion dollars towards affordable housing, economic development, and community service. As the Vice-Chair, David fulfills the roles of driving business when it comes to personal and commercial banking, wealth management, capital markets (which means channeling funds between suppliers, people, and institutions to lend or invest), and more. As a former ambassador, he focuses heavily on supporting political action and economic support and is also the Chair of BMO’s political action committee.

ANALYSIS From such a wide range of fields in his life, he’s earned quite a few experiences and learning opportunities which he’s happy to share with us. We’ll get to hear all about his career journey and some of the struggles he met along the way, including how he’s moved past them and grown from those experiences. Early career struggles are real for students, and not knowing how to recognize and seize opportunities is a common challenge. David’s knowledge of how to succeed in the professional world is extensive. He takes on questions like how to accept opportunities when they come, luck or not. He also discusses keeping track of your network as you travel, starting out professionally, or in the middle of your career. He mentions some interesting things you can do to spice up your resume based on what he looks for in employee hires, and also even touches on dealing with imposter syndrome. We found his advice on these topics incredibly helpful and relevant to us, and we’re really excited to start employing some of the strategies he uses in our own lives, and share this interview with all of you. Let's take a listen...
