MEDIUM LENGTH Blurb:

When going to college, everyone tells you that you need to know what you want to do with your life so you know where to apply, what classes to take, what to major in, and what to interview for.

(Sylvia Kwan) the Chief Investment Officer at (Ellevest) was not someone who knew what she wanted to major in or interview for. She is believer in a liberal arts education to explore all possible paths and all about taking classes that are both interesting and challenging. Today get an inside look into how she was able to find a passion for computer science and applied mathematics before interviewing for a rotational program as her first job out of college.

LONG LENGTH: Short Intro for Podcast

Straight into her talking: 04:12-04:55 and 5:13-5:36.

Hello hello everyone (EXCITED AND WITH ENERGY) welcome back to Office Hours. A show about how to make a successful jump from college to young professional life. We know that landing your first job can often be an intimidating, complicated and stressful process, but its not impossible! (UP ENERGRY) And we’re here to help by giving you acccess to some of the brightest minds in business to get their advice for how to build a successful career. Take what you can (short pause), pick what you like and listen for that stroke of brilliance that you can use to help you get hired. I’m Caroline Radke and on the show today is Sylvia Kwan, the Chief Investment Officer at Ellevest. Sylvia provides her perspective on entering college undecided on the major you are interested in as well as the future of your career, starting all the way at the beginning with the interview process. While Sylvia admits that many of her decisions were not the most wise and looking back, she sarcastically calls them "genius pivots," she has gained unique knowledge and advice regarding figuring out where your passions lie and how to find the area that you want to pursue a career in. Ellevest's mission is to get more money in the hands of women, and as a company built by women, for women, it is important to acknowledge that the chances of a women-run and -founded fintech getting to where they are today is a marginal 0.00019%. Ellevest is far in front of industry averages in terms of employing women, people of color, and appointing women board members. As the Chief Investment Officer, Sylvia Kwan is “the brain” behind Ellevest’s investment strategy and works closely with the Private Wealth Management team. Sylvia has stated that "it is incredibly rewarding at Ellevest to create the investment solutions that women want and haven’t been able to find elsewhere." Sylvia found the mission inspiring and it was easy for CEO Sallie Krawcheck to recruit her to Ellevest as the Chief Investment Officer. However, Sylvia did not always know what she wanted to pursue in life. She started at Brown as an undecided major and enjoyed her literature classes a lot. However, she lacked the challenge in them even though she found them quite analytical. After taking a beginning computer science class, she found the perfect balance between a passion and a challenge and ultimately graduated with a computer science and applied mathematics degree. As the interviewing process began, she quickly realized that the field she had been trained for would not provide her with happiness since she would not be able to see the real direct impacts of her work. After interviewing with basically anyone who came to campus, she found a rotational program in Boston that allowed her to further explore her interests in more depth before finally finding her passion in the financial industry, specifically the quantitative and investment management group. While you may think that having your entire life figured out before college is crucial, Sylvia explains why this is not a necessity and how to navigate college courses, interviews, and first jobs when you do not know what exactly you want to pursue. Let's get straight into it!

Then cut to the interview.

@bryanace53 The medium length intro wasn't in there and also it is not the right length compared to the post that Miri put together. This is only 3 mins when the post is supposed to be closer to 8

@bryanace53 Ok it looks like that is now the right file.

The outro comes in too quickly though at 5:02 and cuts off the last part of her sentence. Can you make it a little later so she is not cut off?

jaahmuhl commented 2 years ago

@bryanace53

For the Short video, the video abruptly cuts her off in mid sentence at the end.

Please change the on screen content to: What suggestions do you have for deciding between a STEM or Liberal Arts Degree?

Take out my question from 00:01-00:20
