CfP is already closed, but we should coordinate the maintainer track, deep dive, booth duty etc.

beorn7 commented 5 years ago

A bunch of Prometheus people from Grafana have submitted talks. Let's see what gets accepted. Obviously, accepted speakers will attend, but there are chances that several of us will attend in any case.

beorn7 commented 5 years ago

Intro and Deep-dive registration is now open. Deadline 2019-08-16.

I'll be at the conference and I am happy to participate in either or both. I would also volunteer to coordinate the submission.

Who else will be in San Diego? @juliusv and @RichiH, you did the intro/deep-dive in Barcelona, and you'll certainly have experience to share.

Let's coordinate!

I won't be in San Diego, but anyone is welcome to use my slides (or do a completely different talk, as they wish)!

I guess the Intro will always be somewhat similar, just updated. But for the deep dive, we might vary things a bit.

RichiH commented 5 years ago

I submitted the Deep Dive; I would be happy to have all Prometheus team members which are on site in the room for both intro & deep dive.

I submitted the Deep Dive

What topics/flow did you submit for the Deep Dive?

Am I right to assume that you have not yet submitted the Intro yet?

beorn7 commented 5 years ago

@RichiH gentle ping about telling us what you have submitted for the Deep Dive.

beorn7 commented 5 years ago

If there are no objections, I'll submit the Intro with essentially the same text as for Barcelona. I assume we can still change the official speakers for both sessions so that we can get conference tickets for those that need it. As @RichiH said, we should have all -team members that are attending the conference on stage at both events anyway.

beorn7 commented 5 years ago

I have submitted the Intro with essentially the same abstract as last year (just replaced Julius by "members of the Prometheus team"). Would still be good to know what abstract @RichiH has submitted.

beorn7 commented 5 years ago

Next up is the booth at the Project Pavilion. The registration form was just sent around. Showcase hours are as listed below. The form wants to know if we will be able to staff our booth all the time, half the time, or just a few hours. Who would be able to do a few hours of booth duty? From that number, we can estimate our coverage and respond to the form.

brancz commented 5 years ago

I have a lot of other things I need to do, but whenever not doing those things I'm happy to hang out at the Prometheus booth like last time. So roughly a few hours a day for me.

gouthamve commented 5 years ago

Same, 3hrs a day would be doable from my side.

beorn7 commented 5 years ago

Great. With 3 people that can spare a couple of hours, and possibly a few more we can recruit on the spot, we should be able to cover "half of the time". I'll put that into the form.

RichiH commented 5 years ago

I put in the usual bla, but keeping open if it will be open Q&A or if it will be a talk.

With a booth, it will be a talk. Still, I would like to have everyone from -team there for both talks so we can answer questions directly.

Bjoern, do you know if we will get the slots back to back like in Barcelona? If you don't know, I can poke CNCF.

Does that mean the same as last year? I.e.: “Join Prometheus maintainers to learn more about the design, project goals and history of Prometheus. We will cover in depth concepts of Prometheus to enable you to get a better understanding of what it is all about. The talk will cover topics including federation, relabelling and PromQL joins. In the end, you will leave with an advanced understanding of Prometheus.”

I had a slightly different idea for this time: Instead of explaining some advanced features in isolation, we could go through a few large-scale production setups that are nevertheless pretty much vanilla and pure Prometheus (i.e. not diverging into Cortex/Thanos/... land or other deep integrations with 3rd party systems). After having worked intimately with the (quite different) setup at SoundCloud and Grafana, I could talk quite a bit about this. If we agree that this would be a useful approach, I'd say that representing it in the abstract makes sense.

beorn7 commented 5 years ago

I do not know, but I don't feel strongly about it, either.

Back to back or not, I do believe it makes sense to have separate entries in the schedule, not the one big merged "Intro + Deep Dive" entry as in Barcelona.
