I like the above idea. If we don't change the order, perhaps we could put reminders of who gods are or races.
Also,
I think character creation could use even more of a revamp than that. A default package that is more than 1000exp/lvl might be good. Even if it ends up being shy some good skills, something closer to 3k for most classes would probably be better. So new players really could select "Default" and move on.

Currently, character creation is a cascade of choices:
The choice that most player are likely care about the most is their class (or at least a broad generalization of their class's skills), but under the current system, that choice comes last, and the previous choices can restrict what classes are open to the player. Character creation should start with players picking a character archetype, e.g.
Character classes
Melee Specialist
Single Wielders
Dual Wielders
Rogues
Magic Specialist
Magic/Melee
