vim polytonic Greek spellcheck file #1

Dear developer, I sent a message to the email you left on the vim script site (lonestar.org), but didn't get through, so I hope this message find you!

I am a long time vim user who started recently to make notes extensively while quoting polytonic Ancient Greek texts. So it came as a relief for me to find your spellchecking file for polytonic Greek: https://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=3388 It works well for me, with one problem. When I load the file via set spelllang=en,polytonic Error detected while processing $HOME/.vim/spell/polytonic.utf-8.spl: E763: Word characters differ between spell files It seems to be simply an error message, but it is quite annoying since it happens every time I load your spell file. My vim version is 8.0

Is there a way to get around it?

Thanks in advance for looking into this!

Best Regards Jiang

Hello Jiang

The problem is with the English spell files. Probably too old. I assume you are using Linux.

Download the latest files 'en.utf-8.spl' and 'en-utf-8.sug' from here: http://ftp.vim.org/pub/vim/runtime/spell/ and put them in your ~/.vim/spell/ The problem should go away.

Also, you may need to delete the existing English .spl and .sug files from /usr/share/vim/vim82/spell/ and /usr/share/vim/vimfiles/spell/

Let me know if it worked.

What are you using Greek for?

Kind regards. Andreas

P.S. The correct email now is @.***

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Unfortunately it still does not work. I downloaded the two files, put in ~/.vim/spell/ and move all the other spell files (in /usr/share/vim/vim80/spell/) to backups with suffices .bak. I still get the same error. Really it's not that much of big deal. The spellchecking works, except for elided words and certain obscure words with odd accentuation.

I am a longtime phihellene who decided to drink from the source and has been studying Ancient Greek on my own, for about three years by now. My interests are chiefly philosophical (I participated seminars of Late Stanely Rosen at Boston University for the half dozen years before he retired), but I long every part of the ancient Greek culture and has been studying her surviving literature more systematically than most of my philosophical peers.

Yes, I've been using Linux as my primary OS for about 20 years now.

I am currently reading the Oresteia trilogy of Aeschylus, and using vim to take notes. I am reading in Greek, so my notes have copious Greek texts, both from the plays and from dictionary entries, commentaries and quotation from other sources. Before I get to your spell file, all my Greek texts are underlined as spelling errors. (I could turnoff spellchecking altogether, but I'm not that good an speller in English...) I also input Chinese, which I use a flag (spelllang=en_us,de,cjk) to turn off any spellchecking for any Chinese text.

Am I understanding it correctly that your email address now is the one on vim script site, just without"sdf" just lonestar.org? It will be much easier to carry out this correspondence (e.g. sending attachment) by email.

I managed to reproduce the error.

Please get the updated .spl file from: https://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=3388

Tell me if it works now.

My email is: proteuss AT sdf DOT org

That works! Thank you so much for taking the time to fix it! Now my vim is up for Ancient Greek, too!

By the way, I see you have a repository for diogenes, the viewer of the TLG and PHI databases. Do you plan to do some work to improve it?

Good. Glad to hear that.

Let us continue the conversation via private email please.
