I honestly don't know if can help Aurio to improve its efficiency/realibility/capabilities, but here's some other interesting - and oftend developed by Universities - open libraries that implements different "detection" algorithms:

Thank you for those links. There are definitely some algorithms/features/descriptors which would fit the Aurio library nicely. I'm not actively pursuing their implementation, but I'm open to PRs.
