I am unable to figure out how to activate the historical mode for the font. Sorry if I'm slow.

You have to enable the OpenType hist feature. How you do that depends on the app you are using and how you select fonts. Some apps have check boxes for font features to enable. Some can enable it by manually adding +hist to the selected font name. Others have no OpenType support at all. So we can't really point you more specifically to an answer unless you give more details on how you are using the font in the first place.

Thanks to Caleb for this reply. I'll just add that ss16 does the same thing as hist because MS Word doesn't allow access to hist. If you're using Word, navigate to the advanced tab of the character (or font?) dialog, turn on kerning and Contextual Alternates, and then select ss16 from the Stylistic Sets dropdown.
