Service Error #23

Open closedstack opened 3 years ago

closedstack commented 3 years ago

Service is running but Launching MakeMeAdmin throws an error. The log later shows this message. Also any users manually added to local administrators (for a temporary workaround) get immediately removed by the service. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot it? Is there a way to turn on debug logging?

See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

** JIT Debugging ** To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this application or computer (machine.config) must have the jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section. The application must also be compiled with debugging enabled.

For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer rather than be handled by this dialog box

Hi @pseymour .. any ideas on what might be causing this or how to go about debugging this issue?

pseymour commented 3 years ago

I'm not sure what the cause is of the named pipe not being available.

I've never seen Make Me Admin remove someone that it didn't add. Is there an event log entry (event ID 1) for this?

closedstack commented 3 years ago

I see event ID 1 but nothing about the error there. The machine had another issue with VPN/DNS connectivity when IPv6 was enabled so troubleshooting that at the moment, but I can send you the event log messages if it helps. Event ID 1 just has the user name and that he was added or removed from the group. that is the other part.. it won't let the user be in the group even if I manually add him to give temporary access.

mma_err let me know if this error helps.. I also have a procmon trace of the system while a) starting the service, launch UI and click the "Add me to Administrators" process. If a process dump or something helps, I can get that too. Of course this doesn't happen on all machines, just a very small subset.

This is from a Windows 7 machine that I saw an issue with if it helps.. I had manually added the user to Local Administrators and then started the service.. got this error trying to remove the user from administrators using Make Me Admin

Steps to recreate the error for me: Non-Elevated account signed into the computer. Open MakeMeAdmin The button for "Make me and administrator" will become available After clicking the button this error message will be displayed: image

I found some errors in Event Viewer that may give additional information into the problem. image

I uninstalled MakeMeAdmin, restarted the computer, then reinstalled MakeMeAdmin but the same error message came up trying to get admin rights again.

I also verified that the MakeMeAdmin Service is listening for traffic on 0.0.0.0:808 image

@pseymour Does this help you figure out what could be happening?

mherbert18 commented 2 years ago

I was getting the same error message after trying to elevate through the application and was actually unable to uninstall the application as well. I ended up deleting the user.xml file and restarting and that resolved our issue.
