2 years ago use "minimize all" applet. The "show desktop" does not minimize windows and this is intentional from plasma devs.

I'm trying to recreate a unity-like experience, and I noticed that "Show Desktop" does not have the intended effect on the buttons or the window title applet. Show desktop should be equivalent to minimizing everything. On unity, clicking on show desktop will remove everything from the top panel and the text "Ubuntu Desktop" would appear. However, these applets still retain the last window after "show desktop".
