Drop Workarea Dialog for "Present Windows" way #78

There is this idea to drop the Workarea Dialog way of showing window previews for spesific Workarea and use a "Present Windows" format instead. This will use more space for the previews and will provide a filter for Windows like the Present Windows effect. Of course dragging windows, closing and changing their state it will be provided also...

The KWin Script brings this feature in focus for the next release...

For the plasmoid I am thinking about keeping both ways... :)

What do you think?

Hi

I am quite happy with the current workflow of the workflow plasmoid ;). The present windows effect has a different layout and purpose (managing windows on the current desktop or current activity) so I would be curious how you want to bring the current matrix layout together with the more local and chaotic and bigger windows style of the present windows but it might work and you have anyway good ideas. In a way I would still see it as two different interfaces that should exist both. Maybe one idea to combine them would be in the way of the zooming UI one could zoom out first to the present windows and then zoom more to the matrix/grid view of the workflow plasmoid. Still something like the present windows I use for the fast alt+tab switching and the workflow plasmoid/script for managing/searching and moving windows around from places to other places. So again, this resembles a bit the zooming idea, one is for the fast switching operations where I mostly know what windows are around and the other for the bigger picture to organize everything.

An interesting idea still to combine both although at the moment I am lacking a bit the imagination to fit both into one UI ;) ...

Hi again,

by "Workarea Dialog" I mean the dialog that is appearing when someone clicks on the windows' number at the bottom left of a Workarea.

That dialog is not at its full potential: cons: --window previews are very small in some cases (the most used one actually 1-4 windows) --the font and the window buttons sizes are not having a default size they are changing their size based on the windows number.

In the beginning I was thinking to create a "Present Windows" like dialog for the previous case but I think I prefer more the grid way of presenting windows. So I will try to fix the above issues with the current dialog....

There is also an idea around that dialog:

13 and I dont know how useful could that be

e.g. all firefox windows in same row, all dolphin windows in same row etc...

Aah ok, then I got it wrong what the idea was about ;). Well I do not use the windows dialog other then admiring the beauty once in a while :). Mostly I get to know what windows are on the certain workarea by glancing at the grid and then choose the workarea from there or move windows to other areas. For the window switching as mentioned above I use the alt+tab switcher. Improving the dialog is of course a nice idea but I cannot comment that much on it as I don't really use it.
