Can we build a historical digital elevation model? #88

An undergraduate student working on a collaborative class project to create a historical campus virtual environment wants to build a historical digital elevation model that would capture topographic changes on campus as a result of large earthworks projects etc. He wants to know if there is information on print maps or from other sources that could support this activity and how he would go about building the model?
