Is there an open-source software alternative to pixel-based image classification? #92

An undergraduate GIS student is interning with a research center and reporting primarily to a disciplinary undergraduate intern who is working more directly with staff in the center. The GIS student has been assigned a task to identify potential rattlesnake habitat across southwestern PA by classifying remotely-sensed imagery. The disciplinary intern has assured her that this will work using data that she has identified. The GIS student knows how to do access the data referenced and the steps using proprietary software and would like to learn open-source software like spatial packages available in R-statistical to do the same task.

The image classification as envisioned by the disciplinary intern and center staff stands no chance of actually working.
