This proposal places the small genera Leptolepia and Oenotrichia into synonymy with Dennstaedtia. These genera were originally proposed to house species considered morphologically aberrant from other Dennstaedtiaceae. However, molecular phylogenetic results place these genera within the concept of Dennstaedtia (sensu Triana et al. 2023), and the morphology of these species is now understood to be in line with the variation exhibited by other Dennstaedtiaceae. Species residing in these genera were resolved as sister in Triana et al. (2023). Combinations in Dennstaedtia are available for affected species.
Reason for change
With our current understanding, recognition of Leptolepia and/or Oenotrichia renders Dennstaedtia paraphyletic. This may change with additional data. That said, even if they were later demonstrated to be sister to Dennstaedtia rather than nested within it, their utility would be questionable. These genera do differ in some respects from other Dennstaedtia, but we consider a Dennstaedtia defined to include them be more useful than one that excludes them. We find little value in having two small sister genera.
