Hello folks from Outreachy - I realized we don't have a main place for you all to ask questions and get support, so I wanted to say WELCOME and create this issue as a discussion zone. Please leave a comment to say hello, in part so we know who's interested in the program! @publiclab/reviewers @publiclab/mentors please keep an eye open for opportunities to welcome and support our Outreachy applicants! 👍 🎉

First contribution

It's so great to see that several of you have made your first contribution. 🙌 This should really help as all our contributions follow this workflow. If you haven't yet, please see this page to get started:

https://code.publiclab.org

What next?

If you're looking for a next project, I might recommend one which starts to involve multiple files in the application code, so you can start to get a better understanding of the application's workings. Are you familiar with how a Rails application works, in terms of how the model accesses the database, the controller performs the logic, and the views display the actual web pages? If not, we can help you start to pick apart how our system works one piece at a time.

You can find a lot of relatively small but not completely documented issues here:

https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/labels/fto-candidate

If you choose one, please leave a comment and we can do our best to help find any missing information or help guide you through the next steps. Don't hesitate to ask questions!

Larger collections of tasks can often be found under the break-me-up label, which you can go through to find smaller projects to "break off" and solve:

https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/labels/break-me-up

Supporting tasks

Another area you might be interested in contributing is in supporting other new people to the project. This is an often unrecognized part of a healthy collaborative project, so we've made these issues to encourage people to take part in this crucial activity. We'd love your help, and as a newcomer yourself, you know exactly what it feels like to be new, so you know how important it is to be welcoming and supportive!

Thanks and we're happy to answer questions!!

Update:

I've posted a call for proposals here, where I'd like to ask each of you to open a draft proposal and get some comments on it! Thank you!!

What are official proposals? In the Public Lab website, I have read that I have to post official proposals on the Outreachy website, but I can't find it on the Outreachy website. Which must be in proposals? Which else I have to do to complete my application?

Hi @bansalsidharthcode and everyone. I am Abdellah Ramadan from Cameroon. I'm quite new to open source. I applied to do internship with Outreachy and this is the first of its kind as I am concerned. I have read all the welcoming messages and I'm very excited to work and learn from the community. I am a student of Software engineering in Saint Monica University Institute in Cameroon. I will like to make my first contribution here so as to be part of the internship and I wish that you create a first-timer issue for me.

Thanks.

@narnt you can checkout the official proposals for past gsoc and rgsoc program here. https://publiclab.org/tag/gsoc You need to make one on publiclab.org and also submit in on the Outreachy website before the deadline

@amychan331 my apologies for missing your PR, i left some comments on it tonight!

@narnt typically we like to reserve first-timers-only issues for folks' very first contribution, since they take some time to create. But if you've already started that's fine! I'm glad you were able to make an initial contribution! As to official proposals, there is a place on the Outreachy website to post your proposal, but we ask folks to also make a proposal on the Public Lab website so we can get community input. I see you've already posted a draft but not your complete proposal there!

I'm not sure I see the same as you on the Outreachy website, but I /believe/ this is the link to where you can post your official proposal to Outreachy: https://www.outreachy.org/december-2018-march-2019-outreachy-internships/communities/public-lab/#extend-community-collaboration-statistics-and-visu

@love-opensource welcome! Very glad to have you here. I've made you a first-timers-only issue here, please leave a comment to claim it! https://github.com/publiclab/plots2/issues/3893 🎉 👍

Hello everyone, I guess it is better late than never. I joined Outreachy late in the process, and this project really caught my eye. This is such a nice community!

I have some experience in JS, Python, and the front-end. I've toyed around with Ruby and C. I am also really into good documentation. I look forward to learning more about Public Lab and getting more involved.

Sorry. I was reading on mobile and accidentally clicked on the close issue button. Reopened it.

Hi, folks -- as you may know, we've accepted Cess to be our Outreachy intern this session (congratulations, Cess!). I wanted to write to thank everyone for their incredible work over the past several weeks. If we had the capacity, we would have loved to accept more people. Our community is growing and perhaps this will be possible in the future.

I want to wish everyone the best whether you were accepted for another project, or if you have other projects of your own coming up in your life, and to make sure you all know you are always welcome here in our community. You're all amazing and I'm confident you all have amazing things in store in the future!!

THANK YOU for everything!!! 🎉 ❤️
