@shapironick - was thinking it'd be nice to display a short paragraph of "welcome" text to orient new people. It could be displayed above the questions if people have answered <5 questions. What do you think? What might it say?

Sounds like a great idea. Here is some text based on what Nicole suggested in the front page discussion. Is it too long?

Welcome!

Formaldehyde is a common indoor air pollutant and it is found in much higher levels in manufactured homes as compared to site-built homes. Scientists are not certain how long-term exposures affect human health, so help science set the record straight by sharing your symptoms and teaching scientists about how formaldehyde in your home has impacted you. Studies have shown that everyday people have a better understanding of their health than doctors do, so every answer you contribute to this questionnaire will not just help you record your air quality issues but will potentially help the many others chronically exposed to formaldehyde.

I think it's a good length but could we say "help set the record straight" instead of "help science set..."?

Do you want this text to be put on the tour that currently pops up the first time someone logs in or on the home page?

If you want it as part of the tour, it will need to be much shorter to reasonably fit into the tour pop up box on mobile devices.

Tour functionality looks great. I've updated the welcome/tour text here http://publiclab.org/wiki/wherewebreathe#Tour/Welcome+text

I numbered them just to make it easier to understand for you but maybe we could have (1of 7) at the top or bottom to let them know how long the tour is going to be. really not necessary but if its as easy as moving some code over from the other progress indicator that it might be a good idea to do.

Is the final charge to participate at the end too much? :)

Ok, I have updated the tour for you guys to see.

• I didnt combine the user button and user menu steps like you suggested yet Nick. I left it for non-techy poeple who might not realize the box floating above the random floating user panel is 1. a button, and 2, what opens the panel. I think its good to be explicit with that one. Also on mobile, the tour popup box covers the user menu button, so when that step is being read, a user cant see the button that is being referred to. Let me know if you really still want me to merge those two steps.
• I put the user menu stuff at the end, because our call to action is the questionnaire, and probably should be the first item mentiond in case users get sick of the tour and cancel it early.
• I think both Knowledge base, and the last tour item could be contenders to be removed from the tour if we want to make it shorter.
• If we want to skip the last call to the questionnaire with the tour, we can just skip it and have the tour automatically redirect to the questionnaire on end.

Caught a giant bug in this, which I have temporarily fixed. (will permanently fix on Monday)
