@shapironick - what is the minimum we can ask people for -- email, username, password, and VIN? Would anything else be something we can ask during the questionnaire?

Those four seem like a good bare minimum! Other questions that we could just have as part of the questionnaire are:

1.Which of the following describes this housing unit? [a) Travel Trailer/Camper b) Mobile Home c) Park Model e) Modular Home f) other __ ]

1. Where is this unit currently located? [zip code]
2. This units is a) your primary residence b) your recreational residence c) a unit you are considering buying d) the property of a friend or relative e) a unit you own with the intention of selling f) a unit that I lived in after I was displaced by a disaster g) the property of a stranger (I’m just curious!)
3. Where and when was this unit bought? [zip code, name of business, date]
4. Do you know or suspect this unit is a FEMA trailer of FEMA mobile home?

I agree, maybe the other questions you posted could be part of the questionnaire. Do we have a master list, or shall we just do that in the Google Form i suggested we could make?

This is also great. We need one more digit on the VIN-- they are 17 digits. You can see the components of the North American VIN here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_identification_number#Components_of_the_VIN

We also might want a help bubble that can pop up if people have trouble finding their VIN "A VIN number is engraved into the tow bar of travel trailers and campers and also printed on their title. A VIN number are 17-charecters long."

We should also have a field for HUD numbers as the vast majority of manufactured homes are identified not by VINs but but HUD numbers I think they are in this format: ABC-123456

Help text for manufactured homes: "The HUD certification number or the serial number can be found on mobile or modular homes on the tow bar, on the data plate on the exterior, on the bill of sale, on the home’s title or, sometimes, behind a bedroom closet door, electrical panel box door, or kitchen cabinet door, each section of a double or triple-wide will have its own serial number."

Sounds good to have a random name generator but people will always forget it--so the log-in for registered users should occur with their email address and password and not user name I assume.

We might encounter some issues about the age of users once we try to get IRB clearance to use this as a research tool. Do you think we'll need a I'm over 18 check box?

Re: over 18, from a legal perspective you probably know more about it than I do.

yes re: email as login -- I was tempted to call the "username" a "nickname" but didn't want people to use an actual identifiable nickname.

It's going to be quite hard to avoid email addresses, since there would be no easy way to recover a lost or forgotten password.

Nick, do you have photos of some typical VIN or HUD locations? I'm thinking we should have a blurb about that. Do you think you could make a section on this wiki page to collect a few photos and draft a blurb? http://publiclab.org/wiki/wherewebreathe

Homes can only have one or the other in terms of VIN/HUD. If its a travel trailer, which make up the vast majority of FEMA trailers then it is small enough to be regulated by DOT and considered a vehicle and thus has a VIN. Over a certain size the homes are actually regulated as homes by HUD and have a HUD number. Hope that makes sense. Sorry for not being clear earlier.

I have lots of pictures of VINs/HUD, but they're on my desktop and im in the middle of a move. I'll get that post up by the end of the week.

We will need to insure, however feebly, that users are over 18. So maybe we can have a check box on the registration page. Can we assume that ‘vulnerable persons’ (e.g. with learning difficulties or with severe cognitive disability) will be unable to find our website and participate in our study? As we would also need added precautions for vulnerable persons.

Please add a “I am at least 18 years of age” Check box under the VIN/HUD number box (this is for ethical review purposes).

I think we should move the text down to above the submit button and much of that text can be in the privacy page and not on the sign in page. How about the following text:

“To create a safe space for sharing health information please ensure that your username does not reveal your real name, address, or contact information. On the site, please be careful about not sharing potentially identifying information.”

We work hard to keep your data secure and we will never share your email address, password or VIN/HUD number with anyone.”

Also the “need help finding your VIN or HUD?” feels a little far away. Maybe we could have that in parentheses next to VIN or HUD.

Also, if we have the signup form on the front page, let's get rid of the standalone signup page, so there's no difference/ambiguity between them.

Is there a list of common first and last names, that we could scan for in JavaScript, and give people an extra warning, like "are you sure you haven't used your name or any identifying information unintentionally?" or something?

In theory we shouldn't be storing the password at all, but only a "salted hash" or something. That would all be under the hood in the user login library Melissa used -- melissa, can you confirm that?

we could left-align "need help" -- and i still like the idea of having two separate forms which provide standard groupings, if they exist -- like XXX

• XXXX would be two different inputs. Anything about that wouldn't work?

The registration page as a stand alone is currently what pages redirect to that require one to be logged in. It would be confusing to direct people to the front page to log in.

In terms of consistency, both pages use the same template. So changes made will be shown on both pages.

Phase II food for thought: Should the stand alone registration page (that unlogged in users get redirected to) also include a form to login like Reddit?

I have unfollowed design-y conversations such as this, so please do tag me if want me to weigh in moving forward, or task me with something if it is an instruction. (My inbox is a bit of a nightmare right now thanks to previously following anything and everything, and I dont have a ton of communication time allocated in my contract)

I like the combined login/signup form -- some sites have one in each of two columns next to each other, with Log in and Sign up as headers. Roger on redirecting to the front page -- i thought briefly about going to an anchor partway down the page, but you're right, we just want a simple login page. In an earlier version i just noticed that there was some info above the form on the solo login page that wasn't on the front page, so just wanted to be sure the same info is shown on both. Thanks!
