Multiple citations formatting in text and in references section #3119

What's your enhancement request?

When create a reference to multiple citations, it would be nice to have the option to number or refer per item. So for example, if I was supporting a claim with reference to 3 journal articles which appear as the 4th-6th specific articles cited, I would like it to appear like this:

Blah blah is the case[4-6]

and in the references section, it should appear as references 4 through 6. Currently, you can include them all in a single citation:

Blah blah is the case[4]

or as separate citations:

Blah blah is the case[4][5][6]

What would this enhancement help you accomplish?

This is in keeping with how many or most publishers format citations and would enhance the look and feel of the document. It would also let me reuse specific citations. It also enhances the readability of the references section which just smooshes together multiple citations at the moment.
