Ingest "PUL Chronicle" (pudl0138) #1630

Open tpendragon opened 6 years ago

tpendragon commented 6 years ago

Notes: (migrate and keep dark)

@jpstroop @joycebcat Are these to be marked private or do we need some sort of embargo system?

escowles commented 6 years ago

These are two series, containing about 200 issues. These could be bulk-ingested into Figgy.

escowles commented 6 years ago

Probably best to migrate each volume as a MVW, with the part number in a part note, and each issue as a child volume.

@escowles and @tpendragon - why are we ingesting the chronicle (and keeping dark)? Could we do CDL? its also available in JSTOR. Where was this stuff before? https://www.jstor.org/journal/prinunivlibrchro?refreqid=excelsior%3Ae96300df30d973c463dccd4c1e0b2e65

tpendragon commented 3 years ago

I'm not sure. I think @jpstroop would know maybe? Most of these tickets were just migrated from the spreadsheet.

jpstroop commented 3 years ago

The Friends paid to have this digitized but wanted a JStor-like interface so we, erm, gave derivatives to JStor. These are the master archival files and we need to keep them because JStor, iirc, only has relatively small JPEGs and isn't really a repository.

jpstroop commented 3 years ago

(to answer @kelea99's question: they were never public anywhere else digitally)

kelea99 commented 3 years ago

Thanks, @jpstroop . If our intent is to keep the entire digitized run eternally dark and have them in Figgy for preservation reasons alone, I wonder if Figgy is the right place for them. If it is, maybe we should discuss adding a visibility indicator for such things that are to remain dark in Figgy (other than Private). @escowles I think the MVW ingest would work fine if we are only preserving them in Figgy. If we want to make stuff available to users, the User Experience for the MVW in our catalog should probably be tested and discussed (think Trentonian). All of these appear to be open access on JSTOR, but if we decided to make the high resolution versions available at some point via figgy, the MVW access is currently an all or nothing setting - they would all be open, or they would all be CDL (due to copyright) and physical items would need to be sequestered.

escowles commented 3 years ago

@kelea99 I think it's fine to ingest them as Private — corner cases like this are the main reason that Visibility and Rights are separate fields. And I agree that ingesting as one big MVW is fine for this purpose, but would be trouble if we wanted to make them accessible.

@roelmoon and @jpstroop there are two (duplicate?) directories for PUDL0138. I'm currently ingesting from pudl=>pudl0138_LibraryChronicle for both bibs (2863923 and 426209). Figgy Collection: Biblia and PUL Chronicle (Keep Dark)

kelea99 commented 3 years ago

Directories are not duplicates.

There should be 76 volumes in 994262093506421 . issues also do not match up. Will continue ingesting from pudl=>pudl0138_LibraryChronicle.

pudl=>pudl0138 is definitely incomplete and contains fewer volumes, but unclear if everything in pudl0138 is duplicated in pudl0138_LibraryChronicle.

Keeping both for time being.
