Use Case - Use Web Annotations - TRANSCRIPTION

Flow

  1. Actor On the day of the Douglas Day event on 02/14/2024, attendee comes to an electronic classroom in Firestone Library to transcribe nineteenth century legal documents from Special Collections on a computer.
  2. Primary Actor On the day of the Douglas Day Event, Event Facilitator helps attendee create fairly clean plain text transcription for each page of an item by the end of the session.
  3. Stakeholder For transcription events like these, The Digital Scholarship Department wants to associate these plain text transcriptions with the existing digitized item "in Figgy" and therefore allow digital library users to access the corrected plain text either: a) via the iiif manifest and/or b) make the plain text downloadable in the IIIF viewer for the item, and c) allow attendees and facilitators to collaborate on web annotations via a plug in (Or whatever -- @sdellis , what do you recommend for wording here?) in our application/s.

Original Question/Request from Bryan Winston

For Douglass Day [on 02/14/2024], we are having attendees transcribe nineteenth century legal documents from Special Collections. After the session, we should have fairly clean plain text transcriptions for each page of the item. Is it possible to associate these plain text files with the existing Figgy entry and therefore allow users to access the plain text via the IIIF manifest or even make them downloadable in the IIIF viewer for the object? I looked through some of the documentation and I can't seem to find anything about associating a plain text file. I see how that's done via the OCR language feature in Figgy and I see how there is other documentation on ingesting files, but it is unclear to me if this particular use case of adding an independently created plain text file to an item is possible.

Impact

Please include hard deadlines, if the exhibit is part of an event, the issue is stopping work, etc.

It may just be because of the closeness of the work, but it does seem super similar to uploading downloadable transcripts. It may be someday we'll want more generic "upload a file you can download when you're viewing this file" kind of functionality.

Agreed. the "I want do upload and have users be able to download plaintext transcripts" seems similar (same?). And fits another user request from RDOS, regarding a project they wanted to do with the public domain dpul exhibit items.
