5 years ago I agree, this was discussed a while ago and a PR has been send in that direction: https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/pull/196 (The "pdnext" release of sebshader is quite nice and give some ideas).
What would be even better for UI is to be able to colorize connections, inlets&outlets, by type (msg, signal, pointer).
