Mixer not automatically starting

So I noticed this back in the early days of factorization in 1.6.4, and I am seeing this issue again now in 1.7.10. For some reason, even if you put the correct number of items in via pipes/translocators/conduits, the Mixer fails to automatically start the process of cleaning the ore gravel. I am constantly having to open the gui, remove and replace either the bucket of water, or the ore gravel before the progress arrows start.

Also, this only seems to be an issue if the gui is not open when the items are deposited. If I or someone else has the gui open when the conduits/translocators deposit items into the mixer, it appears to start processing just as expected, however if the gui is not open, then it does not seem to start.
