Bring master branch up to date with npm #120

The master branch currently has new features which are not on npm (from #118), but npm has commits from the minor-updates branch up until 28af54b7b004a870fc34ae669245d341c151edc9. This PR brings the master up to date with npm. npm can then be updated to v3.5.0.

Future work on upgrading yarn (i.e., the commits I reverted in this branch) can happen now in the upgrade-yarn branch.

Hopefully, this shouldn't require much testing, since we've been using this version on npm for a while now.
