We should add some code format / linting to the package.

[ ] to begin we might want to use pre-commit setup
[ ] Start with Ruff and the basic pre-commit items
[ ] codespell for docs
[ ] Once linting it setup we'd want to add a CI build to run linters on each pr.

Ci can can be a separate issue if someone wants to focus on getting pre-commit setup first.

i guess the question here is whether we want to use pre-commit or use hatch's tools.
