changing to a bsd license #11

is there any chance of changing the license for this project to a bsd like license?

(see http://lucky13linux.wordpress.com/2007/08/06/dragonflybsds-matthew-dillon-on-gpl/ for a reason why this may be a good idea)

Hi Ralf,

I've read the article just now. Honestly I did not find it compelling and thought it was off the mark. GPL isn't about commercialisation of software. It's about the expectation that if you use it you're free to do what you like with it in your own home/company but if you want to redistribute it you have to contribute back to the community that gave you the 'foot up' to begin with.

I never expected to get any money from this small project and the GPL doesn't stop anyone else making money from it. They just have to provide any source code derived from it, which I think is a fair deal.

This project is quite small in any case so any company that did want to make use of it could have someone spend a few days to create the same functionality if they so desired. In principle i'd still prefer that if someone does intend to use my work and distribute it in some modified form that I get to use those enhancements myself. After all, getting that extra help on a project is one of the benefits and incentives to authors like myself who have limited resources to get the job done.

Thanks for the interest in python-crowd and taking the time to contact me. I'm open to having my mind changed but I'm not yet convinced. :)

Regards, Alexander.

thanks for your detailed response. the problem is I'm not free to use it and won't contribute back to the code since I'm not going to use it if it's GPL'ed code. That's quite the opposite of what your intention seems to be.

That's entirely your decision to make. If you feel that the GPL does not provide the freedom you need then that is unfortunate, but I think that it grants sufficient freedom for most people and achieves my goals.

Best of luck in your project.
