Does not connect over 2G #328

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go out of 3G area into G location.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
SipDroids icon in notification bar disappears. It should stay, turn orange
or red or even stay green and reconnect.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Nexus 1, Android 2.1, 1.3.14 Beta

Which SIP server are you using? What happens with PBXes?
Slingshot iTalk, Unknown

Which type of network are you using?
G

Please provide any additional information below.
SipAgent does not have this issue. Now that SipDroid supports smaller
codecs, there's no reason to limit connection to higher speeds.

I second this.

Which SIP server are you using?
MyNetFone

What happens with PBXes?
No Difference

I totally agree.
3G Connections drain battery so fast that it would be nice to have the ability
to use a 2G connection while in
stand by.... not to be forced to use 3G

Oh come on. This is an artificial constraint that didn't exist in early
versions of SipDroid. It's probably a single
"if" that needs to be commented out. Surely someone who's familiar with the
code can quickly patch this.

I have already modified the code (which I downloaded) to allow traffic over
GPRS.
I have also modified speex constants to use the 5.9kbps version.

My conclusion: It is unusable! It has a lot of delay and cuts.
I am on vodafone spain.

I fear my modification of the speex codec bitrate did nothing because I get the
same behaviour as without it.
I modified the DEFAULT_COMPRESSION in the Speex.java to "1". But i get the same
bad results.

Could be greate if anyone knows a little more...

ciao

Hi wjaxxx,

It may well be unusable in Spain, but other countries may fare better. I'm
sure many users would prefer to
choose/test themselves than have the choice made for them. Perhaps, a
preference like "Attempt calls over
unfavorable networks". Maybe Silk will fare better, or ilbc if it ever arrives.

Anyway, if you could submit the patch it would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I will do it if I find out how :)
I am not very used to SVN.
I did a check out, but i do not know exactly how the commit works in terms of
log-in.

SipAgent allows this, as does CSipSimple, along with old releases of SipDroid.
What is the reasoning behind the
WontFix status?

Been making a few calls over G (2Degrees Mobile NZ) using CSipSimple (GSM
Codec), and they are just fine.

I also think it is Stupid that it is 3G limited ..
what about emergancy calls ?
if your in the Bush .. your damn lucky if you can get an G Network .. tho I
guess you are meant to have an Actuall mobile plan with your phone ( Which I
refuse to get :P)

O well for now latatude and an IM to tell some one to get help at that location
will have to do .. ( nice having an large Contact list sometimes :P )

Another vote to 2G activation. 3G drains battery and is not very common to be
always connected to a 3G network instead of switching between 2G and 3G
depending on location.

With asterisk properly configured, you can get very low rates, take a look
here: http://lists.xiph.org/pipermail/speex-dev/2006-May/004453.html

I second the 2G activation. The current behavior of Sipdroid is not a feature,
it is a bug.
