How Can PyLadies Generate a Monthly Income *Outside* of the PyCon US Auction? #2

Open BethanyG opened 3 years ago

It would be great if we could discover/set up some recurring or steady revenue streams that are independent from and a supplement to the auction.

@BethanyG I definitely think we should look into the following:

  1. A range of merchandise, available on pyladies.com
  2. Supporting members monthly donations
  3. gitHub sponsorship

We have a spreadshirt site (the pyladies.com website has a "get swag" button that should point to this but it looks broken 🤦🏻‍♀️ ). It was started by one of the original founders of PyLadies, then I think she handed the account to me - I should have a login somewhere...

Either way, +1 on merchandise (we can choose to move off of spreadshirt if there are other sites that we deem better).

We do already have donation collections setup here (linked from our Sponsor Us page). We can make a general campaign to push this (like how the PSF does a yearly drive, I believe).

I'm not sure about the "supporting members monthly donations." I assume this relates to the suggested change in membership structure. But I think it would be difficult to setup a "membership dues donation" sort of deal.

+1 for GitHub (and in general, corporate) sponsorship.

I think it is easier to set goals around income and get buy in for that. What is it being used for? It is easier to do fundraisers, t-shirt calls, etc when there is a mission with a direct goal. It is harder when you say "We need money."

Thanks for raising good points @econchick & @jackiekazil !

@econchick I wasn't aware of the spreadshirt site before. It looks good but maybe what @BethanyG and I should do, is research other platforms and then present our findings to the group and the PSF. So then we can decide whether to keep the spreadshirt site or not.

Also, re 'supporting members monthly donations' we can ask Phyllis at our next meeting whether this is possible and let everyone know. In the meanwhile please share any other concerns you have about the proposed membership structure. Do you think we shouldn't ask our members for donations ?

@jackiekazil I agree, we may have gone about this in the wrong order. So we'll start again from the top. I'm in the (newly formed) data work group too and we're planning on hopefully sending out a survey next month which will give us a greater understanding of the needs of the community. So we will keep you all updated.
